What is Root Canal Treatment?
Root canal treatment has come a long way over the years and today is relatively comfortable. It is a three-step process that typically requires two office visits.
We will give you a local anesthesia to numb your infected tooth. Once the tooth is numb, we will place a small rubber dam around the tooth to isolate it and keep it clean and dry during the treatment.
We will use small instruments to create an opening in the top of the tooth so we may have easy access to the diseased or damaged pulp. We may have to file or shape the tooth’s inner chamber and root. Debris and lose particles will be irrigated and washed away so all that remains is the pulp. We typically apply an antimicrobial solution into the chamber to destroy bacteria that could be lurking. You will get a temporary filling until your permanent crown is back from the lab. This should take approximately three weeks.
We will finalize the root canal treatment by placing your permanent crown over the top of the tooth. We may need to place a support post within the root chamber to ensure stability of the crown.
